Coppel is the largest commercial store chain in Mexico, being today one of the 100 largest companies in the country. Driven by a strong environmental and climate emergency awareness, Coppel wants to define a sustainability strategy and good practices to achieve a reduction in its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Since 2017, the company calculates the carbon footprint of its direct and indirect emissions derived from its energy consumption (Scopes 1 and 2) with the help of its GHG inventory calculator.

In this context, and with the will to move towards action to reduce its carbon emissions, Coppel counts with Anthesis Lavola support for the review the company carbon footprint calculations, for Scope 1 and 2, as well as its extension to include indirect emissions (Scope 3), with the establishment of science-based GHG emissions reduction targets and the evaluation of effective measures to reduce their GHG emissions.

As such, Coppel aligns with the leading companies in global climate action, approaching initiatives such as the Science Based Targets (SBTi), through which organizations establish emission reduction objectives consistent with the Paris agreements and based on scientific methodologies.

Until now, the review of Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions calculations from Coppel’s activity has already been conducted, and a report was delivered to support the credibility, coherence, and transparency of the organization carbon footprint quantification. Once this initial phase was completed, different work sessions were held with a large number of organization’s departments, led at all times by the Sustainability area, and the indirect emissions categories, that applied to Coppel’s activity, were determined. Finally, after an exhaustive information gathering process, 11 categories of Scope 3 have been considered, that affect the organization, and complete calculation of carbon footprint for 2019 was concluded.

Once the results are presented to the entire company, work will be conducted with the responsible departments to identify specific measures and actions to mitigate GHG emissions for the main GHG emissions categories of the company.

When measures have been defined, their implementation will be analyzed in detail and associated emission savings will be calculated to finally establish science-based GHG emissions reduction targets and demonstrate Coppel’s commitment to maintain global temperature increase below 2°C when compared to pre-industrial temperatures.
