Fira de Barcelona is going one step further so that its events are organised under criteria of sustainability and circular economy. Within the framework of its strategy towards the fulfilment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) it will carry out this initiative in the BBConstrumat and Piscina Wellness Barcelona halls with the aim of converting them into events with zero waste, thus following the steps that Smart City Expo World Congress initiated in its last edition.

Thus, with the advice of the consultancy firm Lavola, these halls will apply circular economy criteria to minimise the environmental impact caused by their activity, such as the reduction of single-use plastic, the use of wood with the Programme for the Recognition of Forest Certification (PEFC) seal, not laying carpet or installing recyclable carpet, or donating food that is not consumed to the NGO Nutrition Without Borders, among other initiatives.

These criteria, which have already been applied in the Smart City Expo and Barcelona Building Construmat, will be intensified in the next editions of these halls and will begin to be implemented in others, such as the next edition of Piscina & Wellness Barcelona, which will take place from October 15 to 18, in which water from the exposed pools will be reused or all excess paper will be collected, among other measures.

Lavola, Fira’s partner in this project, forms part of the international group Anthesis and has a long history of more than 35 years in which it has offered its services to all types of companies and institutions in order to achieve integral sustainability.

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) approved by the UN in 2015 include in its 2030 Agenda such goals from the elimination of poverty to combating climate change, from education to gender equality, environmental protection and the design of our cities.
